A death in the family!

September 1st, 2010

We need to bring the sad news:

Our good friend and manager, Anders Graae, has chosen to leave the music business for now!

Due to personal reasons and changes in the life, Anders as taken the hard but brave choice, to make a clean cut.

This is kind of surreal, since Anders has always been a part of Lis Er Stille as you and we know it.
He was the one that told us that ‘The Construction of the Amptrain’ shouldn’t be released as a EP as we planned, but as a debut album. Because: “I am sick of tired of the fact that new and nervous bands have to release 3-4 EP’s before they have buns to release a real album. Fuck that!”

We save the tear-moistened words for another time. Both because luckily this is not final goodbye at all, since Anders will always be a part of LES and continue to help us out now and then. But also because there’s nothing more to say, besides that we owe Anders a huge part of everything we have ever achieved so far – and hopefully you know that, Dr. Grey!

Third weekend in touring the fallen angel!

June 7th, 2010

We were picked up by a very grumpy bassist. In a grumpy fashion he managed to stay grumpy, along with the grumpy guitarist, the half dead drummer and the hung-over-by-life-lead singer, all the way to Lyngby. Our names remain the same as before, but on this particular day, no such thing as a remembrance of why we, as individuals, deserved a name in the first place, occurred. This is all in retrospect of cause, and I fancy drama.

Our grumpy manager and our grumpy friend Michael from the impressive quintet Ave where waiting for us at Templet, Lyngby.
The first thing we did was to pretend we weren’t grumpy at all. Everyone managed to stay that way until the first obstacle came about, throwing our fragile veil of pretentious good-feel into the abyss…

Our sound engineer… He was all too happy about everything. He had brought his lovely girlfriend to the gig as well, and smile they did. I cannot express the agony I felt, when I saw Jon’s face lower itself like a hydraulic anchor lift giving up all hope in lifting that sunken submarine out of the ocean, that was the concert yet to come. Agony and destruction awaits.

Then! Suddenly Anders came out from nowhere and slammed the bus door on Asbjørns head. A chock went through us all. It was obvious that he had planned to kill the bassist for quite some time now. Tue later admitted to have abandoned his post as the bodyguard for the bassist that evening. I, my self, knew that he had been sitting on top of the fridge from the moment we arrived, doing nothing but sobbing over his lost pincers. (A knifetang In Danish.) I should have done something, but I did not.

Well… After 4 hours of sound checking, we were finally invited back to the backstage area, from which we had previously been evacuated because of Tues sudden urge to avenge his late bassist. We were in for some lovely chili with chili.

While eating, some very good friends of ours came by… Resurrecting the dead bassist! Thank you Anders and Lasse! We never know you had it in you!

Well…

Ave played one hell of a show.

Oh, and yes! We did a great warm up dance, featuring Lasse And Anders! Great warm up dance…

Hello Copenhagen! Nice to see you again! How have you been?!? Good! Thank you! Are you ready to play the best gig ever!? Yes! Of cause! Allways!

Flash back…

We went back to Anders (The manager) ‘s’s apartment, heavy from 7/11 bags with bear and tequila.
We played Power-Factor! Who can fire the other in the worst possible manner!?
Listen here… I got kicked in the finer parts of me! By Lasse! What a show! I was fired! It was a game… We got that straight.

Loppen:

Overly emotional and somewhat distant, we started preparing for the show on Loppen, Christiania, Copenhagen.
We were again accompanied by the great quintet AVE, and also a great folk band from the states called Frontier Ruckus.

Both of them rule the universe of music. They later proved this performing absolutely brilliant shows… Both of them.

We where set to play at 00.00, but before that, Asbjørn the newly resurrected bassist, had to find a new friend. Nobody really knew why, but we simply had to express our understanding and let him leave for an hour or so. He has now become best friends with a painting on a wall. We all congratulate him, and wish him, and his new friend the best of luck and good fortune in the future. Just to make everybody calm, I can announce that Asbjørn is still among us. I did some meditation in the bus to cope with the possibility of having to share my bassist with new people.

We played for the most incredible crowd that night.
We felt like playing 10 feet above our selves, with the audience following. We loved it… We absolutely loved it!

Thank you.

Second weekend of touring!

May 19th, 2010

Good times are definitely here to stay! We have had the most fantastic row of concerts last week. Thank you so much to all of the people that contributed to this: Audience, volunteers, working and friends.

Hereby follows a few highlights (in no particular order):

! If you have photos of any of this, please send us a mail !

  • Hjørring
Never in our lives had we imagined that we would experience such an adventure at this end of the country! Thank you so much Syssel!
  • Party all night
Asbjørn went to bed at 8.30 a.m. on the first night. Finally a little rock ‘n’ roll spirit in this band.

  • Sugar daddy’s new ride
Sound-dude Laurits got him self a new car this weekend! Opel Senator 3.0 with digital dashboard! Beat that sucker!
  • Mother’s homemade pizza
The fantastic organizer from Hjørring had actually persuaded his mother to make homemade pizza and lasagne to us! Catering on a whole new level.

  • Wrong dressing!!
At shit o’ clock we stopped for a hotdog on the way home from Roskilde. Jon was convinced that the man at the gas station was a serial killer, but nonthe less he could deliver the pig. Sadly Martin got sour cream in stead of ketchup and became so angry that he crushed his hotdog to the ground. Pig and sour cream ALL OVER!

  • Death by stick
During the show in Roskilde, Jon hit himself so hard in the head with the drumstick, so that he almost passed out!

  • Flod
If you have not already done so, then go and check out the band Flod! This is the future of post-rock.

  • VHS
Both Gimle and Kulisselageret offer the opportunity to watch VHS movies in the band room. “Blood Sport” and “The Cable Guy” just makes a great evening even better.

  • Whisky and ‘Kolde jomfruer’
Ingen af anden rundes venues nægtede os alkohol! Tværtimod! “What the FUCK, maaan” – jersey style!

  • Snævar
    Dad truly rocks!

reviews.. oh reviews!

April 21st, 2010

The mad manager is on the loose!

So guys. It’s the little man behind the scene that is popping out again. This time, to take a look at the reviews that we have received for The Collibro.

Just to create an overview, we started out by getting slammed with words like “masterpiece” and “album of the year”.. in our little “not fitting into the conventions” world.. that is kinda of teenagers wet dream/worst nightmare. Of cause it didn’t last. Who was silly enough to think so anyway…

The reviews, and the subsequent ratings are (so far) as follows:

Diskant.dk 10/10
fyns stiftstidne 4/6
jyllandsposten 3/6
soundvenue.com 3/6
undertoner.dk 2,5/6
Gaffa.dk 2/6
politiken 2/6

So much for numbers. we only miss 2 grades: 1/6 and 5/6, and we would have covered the whole board. 10/10 is the same as 6/6 right? That could have been soooo cool! Then we could claim to have made an album that defied the boxes of reviews.

What I for one really like is, that there is a big, a very big span in the reviews. that we are splitting waters, that some people think the production suck and that some think it is a class A job, that some people think our name and former band-members are still more important to address, then what Lis has become and that very few topics it repeated through the reviews. It makes me wonder… and then I started to wonder, what a good review really is, for the bands and ultimately for you guys, who are the ones who are buying records, and for who, the review is some kind of “buying guide” if the reviewer writes that an album suck master cock.. then my thesis is that some will be more reluctant to buy it.

SO! in that perspective..
What do we need to know, when we read a review? Lets start with the ratings: the stars, the hearts or what you get. The dreaded grading! I too me, it is worth very little, unless you know the reviewer, what music he likes and dislikes, however they work well and are simple and easy-peacy to understand. 10 is better then one.

Then comes the content, and here, friends, is where I will try and not get too fired up. You see:

I will not discuss specific reviews, because, well, in the end it is not up to us to dictate what we are satisfied with or not. We are happy that people who we do not know will listen and write what they think… and really: I dont care if a review is “good” or “bad”, but i really care if the review is respectful and takes the music seriously.

What I regret, is that so few reviews takes their time to let us know, what it is they like or dislike. I mean.. How much does “masterpiece” or “bad production” really say? In the end.. it could be a master piece, yet, if you are a big fan of lady gaga and the sound she has, I’m pretty sure you will still think that The Collibro’s production suck.

Today I stumbled upon a review made by Jyllandsposten, a free translation would be like this:
The band name “Lis Er Stille” is still a joke, because the Århus based band is far from quiet. Dizzy, bombastic prog-rock, that seem in love with Genesis, Mogwai, Muse and Sigur Rós. large gestures, small sensations”.

That is about 3 lines.. again: I don’t really care if the reviewer likes or dislikes the album, but i deeply regret that he gives 3 years work of 5-6 people 3 lines. I do not think that a review like that is taking anyone seriously. Not the band, not the reader, and in the end not even the reviewer himself.
Why the even bother writing it, when it is absolutely meaningless and holds no real value?

It is a red rag in front of my eyes, that some one have made something, from their hearts, something they want to pass on, and it is served on a silver tray to be dissected, and this person don’t even care enough to give the work some respect. i pray and hope, that all bands, singers and so on who make and put out albums, feel and believe that they are sharing some part of them self and that it is their blood they offer up for highest bidder.

of cause there are also the great ones:
For instance I am really happy about the review posted on Undertoner.dk, even though it gives a hard judgement. The reviewer takes his time, goes into what he personally likes and dislikes. and to me that is what we want, and also what I want to read when I am about to buy new albums. reviews are subjective as hell, and should never try and make out to be anything else. There is no greater truce, only personal opinion, especially when it comes to art. All I ask, is for the reviews to be open to this fact, and to act upon it.

finally, i would like to invite you to take part in the discussion.
- What is YOUR review of The Collibro.. and don’t give me one line.. and Ill kill you ;0)

If you feel like it, I would love to invite you to write a good review of it and let us know exactly and gloves off what you think.
What is a good review to you? what do you want to know

Cheers and much love, Anders.
